Housed in Cassels & Sons’ brew house, the last of the company’s buildings still standing after the February quake, The Brewery is an impressive place to drink. As the name suggests, this place makes a good deal of its own craft beers and has a vast array of neighbouring brewers’ award-winning beers as guests. There’s a real artisan feel too, with the open-plan back bar showcasing a brick kiln for the wood-fired kettle. It’s not often you get to drink in the very room where your pint is conceived, let alone eat, socialise and listen to live music. The music is a big draw for the pub. Normally starting around 11 pm or so, a range of talent plays long into the night. And the best thing of all is that the bar’s licence depends on its food service. So you’ll know as long as The Brewery is open, there’ll be late-night munchies. By far a favourite would be the skin-on fries with ketchup and aioli or a Horotane pizza with pear, blue cheese and smoky bacon. Wood-fired, of course. Just like the beer.
