Displaced until 2013 from its Cashel St premises, Cookai has seized upon the flow from the CBD to Riccarton and opened anew on Nelson Street. The opportunity to start over while retaining some of the popular stuff from the old restaurant has been received with mixed feelings. On one hand, many are overjoyed that a Chistchurch fave is back. The menu remains largely untouched, and the sashimi on rice craving was finally satisfied. But inevitably, the slight price hikes and missing items (chirashi now with no tuna etc) won't go down too well. Add to that some other oversights like bright spotlights and some oily dishes (the soft-shell crab for a start) and regulars will wish Cookai hadn't been forced into that fresh coat of paint. Or the designy wallpaper.Cookai will still do well on its name alone, and with fantastic friendly service and overall great Japanese food, it's still worth a regular dinner.
