Volstead Trading Company Information
The Volstead Trading Co. is a concept devised by a few Christchurch locals to create an environment for social interaction that contradicts the traditional bar scene. With a focus on exclusivity, subtlety and a relaxed atmosphere, The Volstead Trading Co. is bringing back the glory days of the 1920's Speakeasy, a bar for those in the know, away from the common scene.

Rather disappointing. The woman behind the counter was not only stonily unfriendly but seemed to have a mild case of American teen angst.....not to mention the friends she was chatting with at the same time. The place has a redneck feel to it that is a bit off-putting to anyone with higher standards in culture. 'Altogether unappealing', is my final conclusion.
I have heard great things about Volstead, so was excited when I finally got a chance to check it out. Unfortunately, 'very disappointed' describes my experience. The venue was great, but I was appalled by the derogatory service we received from an unkempt, track-suit-pants-wearing barman. We should have walked straight out, but were so taken aback by the barman's remarks that I paid (too much) in stunned silence. The too-saltly chips were inedible. The beer selection is what increases this review from zero to 1 star.
This has to be the cherry on the cake that is Christchurch! Now with a full kitchen which offers a great range of bar snacks, 5 handpulls and a fridge of ever-changing imported and back-of-beyond beer, surely volstead trading company is enough to keep even the fussiest people happy. Music is great, staff are amongst the best educated in town, and a fit-out that Tracy emin would be proud of... But no dirty knickers!!! Top job boys!
It was with some apprehension that I went to Volstead. Despite the romantic Prohibition notions, it was at the end of the day a bar in a garage. Luckily, when I got there, it was better than cool. Genuinely unpretentious, and a bit more shabby than chic, but with enough quirks to kickstart conversation.
The bar is well thought out with an excellent selection of beers, including Moa on tap and guest beers. Wines are also up to par, in particular with a gorgeous pinot gris from Waipara Hills. Not so sure about the cocktail list. It seemed to play it disappointingly safe, and not a great deal of people seemed interested.
Volstead works well in the location and offers Riccarton something a bit less mainstream. A real good effort and great place to hang out.
Had an awesome afternoon at Volstead Trading Company yesterday. It's an awesome set up to enjoy some pretty sweet beers. Great to see a beer fridge full of IPA - cudos to the fellas behind Volstead and am looking forward to many more lazy arvos there in the future.
