Three out of Five stars
Running time: 92 mins

Watchable sequel that delivers on the required amounts of shock and gore but is hampered slightly by Donnie Wahlberg’s giggle-inducing performance.

The Background
Cult horror flick Saw was one of the biggest surprises of last year, so it’s no coincidence that a sequel has been rushed into production. Luckily, it has some of the same people behind it, including no less than three returning cast members, several producers and co-writer Leigh Whannell.

The Story
Twisted serial-killer Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) is back and this time the cops, led by Detective Eric Mathews (Donnie Wahlberg) catch him really easily. However, just as they’re about to lead him away, Jigsaw reveals a series of video screens showing a room with eight more potential victims in it.

The Good
Saw 2 gives talented, creepy-looking character actor Tobin Bell the chance to shine again as the cancer-ridden serial killer. He’s extremely good here and even manages to make you feel a little bit sorry for him during the diagnosed-with-cancer scenes.

The other performances are equally good, with Glen Plummer (level-headed victim), Emmanuelle Vaugnier (hotheaded victim), Timothy Burd (creepy victim) and Franky G (violent thug victim) the standouts.

The Bad
However, the film is very nearly capsized by Donnie Wahlberg’s appalling performance as Detective Mathews. He seems to think that hitting things and scowling is enough to constitute a well-rounded performance. As a result, you’ll be hard pressed not to start giggling at him.

That said, the majority of Saw 2 concentrates on the plight of the victims, so Donnie’s not on screen enough to do any serious damage.

The Conclusion
In short, Saw 2 is a perfectly acceptable sequel to Saw. Anyone expecting more of the same won’t be disappointed, though, obviously, it lacks the originality of the first film. Worth seeing.
